GeoEngineers is proud to be a part of The Restorative Design Collective, a team of the Northwest’s leading green building professionals striving to lead the sustainable building movement. The team’s inaugural project is a science building for an independent elementary school located on Capitol Hill in Seattle.
The team is working pro-bono and will design the building to meet the standards of the Living Building Challenge, a program that strives to balance the natural and built environments through sustainable practices. The challenge is comprised of 20 requirements divided under seven performance areas: site, water, energy, health, materials, equity and beauty. GeoEngineers will contribute specialized expertise in geotechnical engineering, environmental site assessment and surface water infiltration support such as permeable pavements, rain gardens and bioswales that treat, store and naturally infiltrate water. GeoEngineers will also assist in evaluating the feasibility of applying other sustainable systems such as ground source heat pumps and using groundwater for drinking water.
The new Bertschi science building will be the first Living Building completed in Washington. It is planned to go to construction in 2010.
