GeoEngineers’ creative shoring design for a Seattle high-rise project received a Gold Award for Original or Innovative Application of New or Existing Techniques at the 2010 American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) Washington Chapter Engineering Excellence Awards. This annual program recognizes the state’s best engineering achievements, and the awards are among the most prestigious in the industry.
GeoEngineers received the award for its work on the 1918 Eighth Avenue high-rise development, which is located in the heart of downtown Seattle and is surrounded by other structures and busy streets. The shoring design for the project, developed in conjunction with Ground Support, PLLC, required an unusual combination of solutions to avoid disrupting adjacent buildings and to meet city requirements.
The project team used an innovative two-phase approach along a portion of the building’s east side that consisted of two soldier pile walls with a mined-out section between them. This unusual design enabled the project to proceed when the traditional options for tieback anchors that extended below adjacent buildings were not available. In addition to the Gold Award for the 1918 Eighth Avenue project, GeoEngineers also received ACEC Bronze Awards for its Knapp-Wham Diversion Improvement and Hazel’s Creek Regional Stormwater Facility Feasibility Evaluation projects.
ACEC Washington is the professional trade association representing consulting engineering firms, land surveyors, planners and scientists in all engineering disciplines throughout Washington state.
