The Army’s Net Zero goal means that bases will be “designed with zero water and energy waste.” This is a big deal.

I’m a big fan of TIF, Tax-Increment Financing. I have been since brownfields redevelopment came to the forefront over 10 years ago. Most of the new TIF concepts came out of this browfield era.

Roger Valdez, writing for CrossCut.com, provides the most detailed explanation I've seen of why Washington State one of the last states to deploy this powerful economic development tool.

After initial investments, it just makes sense to measure building performance and to conduct Life Cycle Cost analyses.

Last summer (2011), Olympic Pipe Line completed the Quilceda Creek 16-inch Pipeline Lowering and Roughened Channel Project in Marysville.

It was very exciting to see this project completed successfully, not only from the pipeline safety perspective, but also with respect to fish habitat.

GeoEngineers appears to be leading our industry not only in our technical and business solutions, but also in how we work.

GeoEngineers is playing big and it starts with our space.

On February 20, 2012, drilling commenced on a deep exploratory borehole at the sprawling 30,000-acre Thomas Hill Energy Center in north-central Missouri.

The deep borehole, the second of four that are being drilled at Missouri power plant sites, will extend into the Pre-Cambrian granite and, at a projected depth of 3,500 feet, will be among the deepest ever drilled in Missouri.

Should the federal government decide to regulate carbon emissions, sequestration of carbon dioxide in deep geologic formations will become a very important component of our nation’s energy strategy.

For a company, strategic planning refers to the mechanism by which the organization produces a plan for the future and an attempt to predict the desired outcomes of that plan.

In short, it provides a pathway to direct a company to its ‘North Star,’ or guiding principles, and how to get there. If everyone knows where the company is headed and the mechanisms to achieve this direction, there is a stronger probability that they will get there.

Personally, I have very much enjoyed the strategic plan process.

Return on financial investment is important, but emerging non-financial performance indicators such as health and longevity, knowledge and happiness are important, too.

I just learned about an upcoming competition sponsored by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), the Sustainable Civil Engineering Award. It’s intriguing to consider in light of the planning now in the works at GeoEngineers. A small group of us is thinking about our 2012 strategic plan, which will in part address business drivers, innovation, sustainability, leadership in our craft and more.
