Overview
This major utility client has more than 650,000 oil- and chemical-filled devices in its asset inventory—from a single transformer to 4.2 million gallon-capacity diesel storage tanks—so it must actively manage periodic spills that occur when assets are damaged.
The utility relies on GeoEngineers to manage their Spill Response Program, which includes receiving direct requests from utility personnel, sending out first-response teams and coordinating agency notifications, remedial activities, documentation and reporting. So when program managers asked for immediate and full access to all spill-related information, our Applied Technology team developed custom software that organized the spill data and presented it in a graphical, web-based format.
Approach
- Developed a secure, web-based application for data entry, viewing and reporting
- Provided spatial mapping and searching for spills based on type, date and location
- Created features that included multiple viewing options, advanced ability to search for spills by criteria and user-defined view detail
- Built on Esri®’s ArcGIS Server™, Microsoft’s SQL Server and SharePoint™

- Utility staff are able to access spill information more quickly and cost effectively than in the past.
