When Jon was in high school, he participated in a bridge contest sponsored by the Missouri Society of Engineers (MSPE), and he credits this event with guiding his career towards engineering. His involvement in MSPE continues to this day. “I’m now the secretary for the Ozark Chapter of the MSPE, and our bridge contest is still one of our biggest events to get kids interested in engineering.”
As a GeoEngineers Associate, Jon works on energy projects for clients around the country as well as transportation and development projects, mostly with Missouri-based clients. Describing his work, he says, “When I came to GeoEngineers in 2008, the Springfield office was strictly a horizontal directional drilling (HDD) shop. I’ve worked the past few years to extend traditional geotechnical engineering services to some of our great energy market clients while building GeoEngineers’ local and regional geotechnical engineering presence.”
Innovative projects and those that use new techniques or combinations of technologies, such as the Lake Tanycomo retaining wall project, keep Jon excited. “Drew Sparks and I designed a hybrid retaining wall with a launchable riprap toe along Lake Taneycomo in Branson, Missouri. That was a pretty cool project,” Jon reflects.
At home, Jon’s four kids keep him hopping, as does the family’s small hobby farm, which features a vegetable garden, one horse, three cows, three sheep, one pig and eight chickens. Jon enjoys serving with his wife at his church and is an avid acoustic and country music fan. In his rare free time, Jon loves to fish, he has been recognized with a Missouri Master Angler award, and also pursues other outdoor activities including canoeing, mountain biking, running, camping, and hunting.
