As the Principal Business Unit Leader for GeoEngineers’ Applied Technology group, Scot leads the group that’s the “Technology” portion of GeoEngineers’ tagline, “Earth Science + Technology.” Scot and his AT group support GeoEngineers’ technology needs (cartography, analysis, data management) and are developing a line of business implementing technology solutions directly for GeoEngineers’ clients.

Despite his role as a technology leader, Scot sees himself as a problem solver first and technologist second. “I like to spend time up front fully understanding what the problem is before a technical solution ever comes into play,” he said. “That is my passion and strength—really getting to the bottom of the problem that needs to be solved, developing an approach to solve it and then implementing a solution that is agnostic in its underlying technology.”

Scot’s previous job was with a software company, so he really enjoys having access to subject-matter experts in the earth sciences at GeoEngineers. “Here at Geo, I’m able to work closely with scientists and engineers to develop really valuable applications/solutions that benefit our clients,” he noted. “This joining of earth science and technology brings out the best of both.”

In addition to his abiding interest in problem-solving and technology, Scot is an avid runner and kayaker. He also plays the bagpipes! Perhaps his most important job, though, is helping raise his two daughters. “They keep me mentally sharp,” he said.
