Assistant Driller

Location: Spokane, WA  |  Type: Full Time  |  Department: Geotechnical

As an Assistant Driller, you will be responsible for assisting with geotechnical drilling for onshore and offshore subsurface investigations, and at times leading them. The Assistant Driller is expected to periodically serve as the Driller when the Driller is absent from work.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Operates and maintains drilling equipment including rigs, trucks and supporting equipment.
  • Assists the Driller with all drilling tasks in a safe manner.
  • Assists in setting up, taking down, and transporting geotechnical drilling rigs and support vehicle equipment for truck mounted highway rigs, all-terrain vehicles, truck mounted marsh rigs, or over- water barge/vessel drill rigs.
  • Assists Driller in establishing professional behavior with regards to how services are performed and behavior.
  • Cleans drill rig area and keeps it clear of safety hazards. Maintains clean exploration department shop environment.
  • Handles, sorts, and moves drilling tools, pipe, cement, and other materials.
  • Manipulates sections of pipe or drill stem at the rig floor during drilling, as well as during the removal and replacement of strings of pipe, drill stem, and/or drill bit.
  • Maintains drilling equipment and repairs machinery as required.
  • Transports materials and well service equipment.
  • Performs shop or warehouse duties such as general auto maintenance and repairs, drill rig maintenance and repair, grinding and helping with welding and cutting metal, cleaning, and washing trucks and drill rig equipment.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required. Associate’s degree or advanced training preferred.
  • 6 months of related drilling or general mechanical experience preferred. Experience within appropriate discipline (geotechnical, environmental, etc.) strongly preferred.
  • Experience driving two-ton trucks with a standard five or six speed transmission preferred.
  • Ability to interpret and apply technical information and instructions.
  • Ability to complete work under a variety of environmental conditions, including extreme heat, cold and rain, as well as working over water.
  • Professional-level verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to consistently meet tight deadlines in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.
  • Must be able to meet health and safety requirements for the position.

Physical Requirements / Work Environment

  • All candidates are subject to completing a background check, and reference check.
  • All candidates are subject to complete drug/alcohol testing.
  • All candidates are required to participate in our medical surveillance program.
  • Ability to perform a wide range of physical activities and do heavy work including exerting up to 50 pounds of force repeatedly throughout the day, as well as 100 pounds of force occasionally.
  • Ability to perform consistent work on a PC with prolonged sitting and view of a monitor/screen.
  • Ability to travel for short-term and long-term assignments as needed.
  • All employees are responsible for conducting their work in a safe manner. This includes identifying potential safety hazards and reporting them to the designated project manager in a timely manner and participating in project safety briefings. This also includes wearing appropriate safety equipment when working in the field and completing all required health & safety training prior to beginning fieldwork.

Our best estimate of the salary range for this position, located in Spokane WA, is $19.60 – $27.45 per hour. Compensation offered will be based on a variety of individual factors, including education and experience, as well as internal equity. GeoEngineers’ salary ranges are reviewed and updated each year and employees are eligible for pay increases based on individual performance. As part of our competitive total rewards package, employees in this role may also be eligible for our annual year-end bonus offering, subject to program eligibility requirements.
