EERI Webinar: Tools for Regional Scale Risk Assessments in the San Francisco Bay Area

Dr. Melanie Walling, PE, is participating in an upcoming webinar (August 30) on assessing seismic risks in the San Francisco Bay Area. The webinar, organized by the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute’s (EERI’s) Younger Members Committee, will give an overview of new regional risk assessment tools being developed by Pacific Gas & Electric. Visit EERI’s website for more information and to register. We hope you’ll join us there!

The Panel Includes:

  • Dr. Alidad Hashemi, Hashemi & Elkhoraibi Earthquake Engineering Inc.
  • Dr. Melanie Walling, GeoEngineers
  • Dr. Nico Kuehn, UCLA
  • Dr. Michael Greenfield, Michael Greenfield Engineering
  • Dr. Albert Kottke, Pacific Gas & Electric
  • Moderator: Renmin Pratell, University of Nevada, Reno

The speakers will discuss (1) a raster-based landslide model based on multi-modal analysis that provides the likelihood of earthquake-induced slope failure and estimated runout, calibrated based on historical data; (2) a raster-based model of liquefaction that provides likelihood, vertical settlement, and lateral displacement, based on a 3D geological model, a CPT and SPT dataset, and an updated regional groundwater model; and (3) an example application that highlights the importance of correlated ground motion for quantifying risk and impact of risk attitude on the risk scores. These tools will help prepare for earthquakes in the Bay Area.

When: August 30 | 11:00 AM-12:00 PM Pacific Time
