I-90 Snoqualmie Pass East Project Wins Award

GeoEngineers’ I-90 Snoqualmie Pass East project won an America’s Transportation Award and is one of 12 finalists competing for the national Grand Prize and People’s Choice Award. The project was nominated for “Best Use of Technology and Innovation” for the careful integration of wildlife habitat and highway crossings.

The project successfully widened a 15-mile stretch of I-90 in Washington State from Hyak to Easton as the highway climbs through Snoqualmie Pass. The completed highway includes six travel lanes, a new alignment that reduces avalanche risks and wildlife crossings to allow animals to safely cross the road. Atkinson Construction led the project team, with Jacobs providing designs and GeoEngineers as the geotechnical subconsultant.

America’s Transportation Awards come from a partnership between the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), the American Automobile Association (AAA) and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. The competition recognizes state departments of transportation and highlights important regional projects. The Snoqualmie Pass East project won an award for the Western regional chapter of AASHTO, WASHTO, before moving on to compete for the national awards.

The Grand Prize is awarded by a panel of judges, but your vote can help GeoEngineers’ project team win the People’s Choice Award. Winners of the two national awards receive $10,000 to designate to a charity or scholarship. Winners will be announced at the AASHTO Annual Meeting in St. Louis, Missouri on October 5.
